Back with a bang

children's party, Dessert table, Parties Comments Off on Back with a bang

The last 10 or so months have passed by in a blink of an eye! When someone, only few weeks ago, asked me if i was still writing my blog, my reply was ” yeah, I only stopped for a couple of months because I got hacked but I’ll soon be online again”

A couple of months!?!

It has been AAAGES and I didn’t even realise I neglected my blog for so long, too long..

Anyway the good news is that i’m still alive and kicking and what’s best is that we are starting with a new blog post about…. parties and cakes!

Many things have changed but my passion for creating parties and baking is still the same. Recently I have organised my daughter’s 6th birthday party and I felt back in the game!

This year’s theme was Cinderella.  My daughter (ok, it was me too!) fell in love with the latest movie and desperately wanted to have a princess party so she could wear her fab dress.

I was keen to bake a different cake so after spending hours on Pinterest I found the one i wanted: a Cinderella carriage cake! Don’t even let me start with how difficult it was to get those $%&£ wheels not to break and to stand up!

But overall I thought it would have been more challenging creating this cake and I was pleased to discover that my baking mojo was not all lost after all.

We set up a table with colourful Cinderella party plates, napkins and cups which I got online from the Partyrama website (have a look because they are definitely the cheapest on the market!).

I then set up a different table where I put all the “party goodies” for the kids to take home once the party ended. I made some Cinderella cupcakes…

And then we (obviously) had some magic wands and on each one of them, there was a little star glass bottle filled with Magic dust

We hired a hall at our local church so it wasn’t a great setting to get good pictures..

If you are wondering what a Minion cake has to do with Cinderella.. well .. few weeks ago it was Leo’s birthday and because I knew many of his friends were coming to Bee’s party, I thought to bake a cake and sing a happy birthday song for him too! Next year he’s going to have his own party too.

The room was filled with laugh, love and fun! What I love the most about these parties is that year after year Beatrice is still very fond to have what they have become her truly best-friends throughout the years.

These amazing girls who she met when she was only a baby at her nursery and who she still has an amazing bond with. That’s truly magic!

The tricky bit about the parties (at least for me) is finding a good way to entertain the kids.

This year we decided to give someone else the task to make the kids having a couple of hours of great fun. And thank God we did as the person who was supposed to open the hall doors arrived late so I was late myself setting up the whole party but the ladies from “It’s in the bag” came to the rescue!

As soon as the kids arrived they were there, ready to shout their lungs out and make sure the kids had a blast!

It was a lovely birthday party and although mummy organised it all, who got to have a picture with the birthday girl!??!? Daddy!!! Oh well…

Easy DIY children activities

Daily photo, family Comments Off on Easy DIY children activities

I know I have chosen to live in Scotland but honestly we didn’t even have a taste of summer yet (oh yeah we did for one day, that’s it! Now I guess it’s over!)

Staying home with the kids while it’s pouring outside is not much fun so I searched for fun DIY tutorials on Pinterest and I found a few which were pretty simple and very creative. We have kept aside few (lots actually) loo rolls and last week we finally made some funny animals by using the rolls and some coloured paper.

We first made a Lion and used a heart cutter for the nose and the feet.

Then a fun, pinky elephant…

A crazy looking bunny…

A little more elaborated bunny…

And a pretty cat with bow (yes that’s a bow on the top of her head)…

We spent a whole afternoon creating these animals and even Leonardo who is only 2 was pretty excited to glue bits and pieces together and loved playing with them. Check my “Create with children” Pinterest board to get tutorials for the above and to find more craft ideas which will hopefully inspire you to get creative with your children.

Your best pictures in a book

family Comments Off on Your best pictures in a book

Like any other mom I am literally obsessed about taking pictures of my children, many times a day. Sometimes I take one after another only because my son slightly changes expression and I want to snap every single one of them or my daughter smiles making different faces. My husband still wonders how I can run out of memory on my phone so quickly!

When I’m in my bed, at night, I like to look through the pictures I took during the day and then I like to share them with the world. I put them on my social media channels where friends and family can see them or I send them via email.

Out of all the pictures I take, I put the best ones (obviously) on my Facebook and Instagram accounts but I always think that it’d be nice to have them all printed. Well now I can print my Facebook photos!

I discovered this great online photo book service called Printrbook that allows you to easily pull your pictures from either your Instagram account or your facebook account (or a combination of both) and make a cute photo book!

The book is a compact collection of all your best photos. You have two options regarding the number of pictures you would like to print, each book can contain either 25 or 50 photos. The book itself measures 10cm wide by 11cm tall which is a great size if you want to give it to someone as a gift. For us for example it’s ideal as we can just post it to the grandparents who keep asking to see picture of their beloved nephews and better appreciate a photo book than a picture on a computer.

On the Printrbook website I found simple instructions which guided me to either add captions I had on each picture or to add the date when the picture was uploaded on my account. I could choose to have either 1, 4 or 9 photos on my cover, plus I could add a Title to the book as well, which was printed on the front page. And obviously before going to the checkout I could see a preview of the whole photo book.

It took me literally 15 minutes from choosing the pictures to ordering the book. I found pretty straightfoward to create the photo book and for me this is a plus as I usually cannot deal spending time with layouts, sizing pictures, etc.

The only downside which I could think of, is that seeing the size of the book, it could perhaps be a little bit cheaper. A 25-photo book is £12.99 and a 50-photo books is £15.99. Having said that shipping anywhere in the world is FREE.

AND if you would like to create your own Facebook photo book , the guys from Printrbook.com have been so kind to create a special discount code for my readers only.

To get 10% off your own photo book (Instagram, Facebook or a combination of both) you only need to add the code “mamma10” at the checkout. Just remember this code will expire the 17th of July.

Keep snapping and keep sharing your memories!

Is your bed making you ill?

family, Health Comments Off on Is your bed making you ill?

Every now and then I like to write a post about my cleaning obsession which I am actually very proud of 🙂 And what better occasion than spring cleaning time to talk about bedsheets and how oftern you should change them?

Some time ago I read an article regarding children’s bedsheets and I cannot help but think that sometimes we underestimate the amount of germs that a bedsheet can contain.

Before going ahead I’d like to stress that I was not paid to write this article and as odd as it sounds, I actually like giving out information to keep your house as germ free as possible (yeah it’s an odd liking).

In my previous article I talked about the importance to make sure that your clothes and your sheets are not only cleaned but disinfected too. This time I’d like to talk in particular about the real possibility that your bed could make you sick…yep!

New research has found up to 10 million dust mites live and feed in just one bed! Whilst dust mites themselves are harmless, their faeces and body fragments can trigger allergic reactions prompting our body to release histamines to attack the allergen. This can cause eczema and hay fever, and estimates suggest dust mites may be a factor in up to 80 percent of asthmatics.

Items that comes into direct contact with the body, such as bed linen, are most likely to be contaminated with pathogens and after just one night of use, your bed sheets can accumulate a horrifying array of dead skin, bacteria, fungus, mites, and even faeces EEEEWWWWW

We spend around a third of our daily routine in bed so making sure that it is hygienically clean is a must if we want to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria. So what exactly should we do?

Experts suggest that:

– we’d need to change our bedsheets at least once a week

– we should wash our bed linen separately from the rest of the laundry

– if washing at lower temperature we should make sure to use a disinfectant (I use Dettol antibacterial) which is actually proven to kill 99.9% of bacteria

– Decrease the temperature and humidity levels in your bedroom to reduce the number of dust mites

· Regularly vacuum all soft furnishings, including your mattress, within the bedroom

Out of these five valid points I’m guilty for number 1 and 5. Honestly, sometimes the time goes so fast that I think I changed the sheet only the week before but actually 2 weeks have gone by. I’m better when it comes to the kids bedsheets as I probably feel more guilty thinking that they could get germs from their own bed. Somehow I like to think that by providing added protection while they sleep I take better care of them especially knowing that they daily get enough germs from the nursery!!

dettol

Last week it was finally a bit warmer so I got the opportunity to wash our pillows and let them dry outside.  I just added a bit of Dettol antibacterial to the washing machine to make sure they were properly disinfected. I usually buy the big bottle in Costco so it lasts longer. At the moment I’m actually using the antibacterial for all my laundry and the idea that I can wash at lower temperature but still disinfecting them gives me a piece of mind especially when i see my kids coming home every day either with the a cold, a cough or a runny nose…

So just remember not because it smells good and it is stains free,  it means that it is actually hygienically clean.
