New moms must-haves

family Comments Off on New moms must-haves

I was reading an article about the 10 things that every new mom MUST have and although I have to say it is difficult to remember what I needed the most after giving birth, I managed to create my own list.

Only 2 years have passed by but it actually feels like my baby was born aaaaaaages ago (unfortunately I don’t have the same feeling for the birth experience – if I close my eyes I can still feel the pain OUCH – I actually need to invent a better , stronger word to express “all that”).

Anyway going back to our 10 – why 10? I’m going to list 9 – “must-haves”  for new moms, I have to admit what was really essential for me was having at least 5 muslin cloths spread around the house. Funny enough the first time I said to my husband I was buying some, he said (I swear he said this) “Why do WE buy musliM cloths if we are not Muslim?” ehm…never mind.

So those are essential especially if you get a baby like Beatrice who used to throw up like a fountain. It was hard to believe that a baby so small could have such a powerful jet of vomit!

The second thing I found very useful  having, was a little swing where to put the baby in during the few free moments when you can be “detached “from her (literally detached if you breastfeed).

Ah if you breastfeed the MUST have are breast pads. I remember I used to think “naaa I don’t need them, cannot be that bad”. Well the first time I went out without them I looked like.. you know when you go for a swim and then u don’t wait for your bikini to dry out and you decide to put a t shirt on and two huge wet marks appear? The difference with breastfeeding is that the stains don’t stop expanding on your t-shirt because the milk doesn’t stop coming out! So please don’t forget them in public places! Unless you are on a beach of course.

Number… number… 4 , you must have lots of footed pyjamas cause really babies don’t want to look like little adults but they just want to be comfortable so pleeease allow them to be. One good reason is that this period will be the only time in their lives where they will be allowed to wear PJs 24 hours, 7 days a week for at least 1 FULL YEAR! Priceless!

Number 5, forget about Sophie the giraffe (so expensive and Beatrice never even looked at her) You need to buy or ask someone to buy for you  a coloured teething necklace made of soft plastic beads which have different shapes and animals, they will love it!

Next in the list is your MUM. After giving birth the best person who can understand YOU and your feelings is actually your mum because she will know what to do, what NOT to say and she will be there for you no matter what. And the best is you will discover how precious the relationship mom-daughter is.

Number 7: a nursing pillow. Again either if you breastfeed or bottle feed or you just want to hold your baby and don’t get backache after few minutes, these shaped pillows are amazing. Then when the baby grows you can sit him there and he will be falling on soft grounds.

Number 8:  tummy soother. Almost all babies will experience painful colic and tummy soothers (I used to buy Infacol) are brilliant! Just give it to the baby before feeding times or/and whenever you know his tummy is sore, it works!

Number 9 a husband! When you are about to freak out you MUST have a husband, or a partner, or a close friend (pets help but they cannot really change nappies) basically a person who you can call and who can come to rescue YOU, new mamma!

I am a Barbie mum

Beatrice likes, husband, Inspiration Comments Off on I am a Barbie mum
Mummy ehm  Beatrice is definitely crazy about BARBIE!
I know bla bla for safety reasons I should probably have waited to give Barbie to Beatrice until she is 3 but so far she tried only once to swallow Barbie’s ring which therefore was quickly removed from her collection (oh well along with the high heel shoes, the diamond tiara and the golden medal – the medal of “Barbie snowboard champion” which  it is the only Barbie doll my husband approved).
I just love looking at Beatrice playing with Barbie: she holds Barbie in her arms and taps her little back to put her to sleep, then she combs her hair and actually makes her look like she’s insane!
And then she puts her in the little baby pram and drives her around the living room. Awww happy times for both of us…

I still remember my Barbie collection and the clothing I had and the shoooes and the chewed feet  “yum yum” the gum was quite good to bite off and the shoes used to fit better after that!
So far Beatrice has only got  4 Barbie. You would think “why only 4?!?” Yeah exactly why..I tell you why, it’s all my husband’s fault! You should have seen how crossed he got the first time I brought up this “Barbie topic”. Gosh he got concerned ( the tone of his voice was serious as if we had to take the important decision about  which school we were going to send Beatrice to)

“ I don’t want dolls around the house!”  Actually he added “No dolls/no pink clothes/no pots and pans/no princess dresses” ( yeah I know crazy! I will talk about this “issue” another time) .

My reply to all that nonsense was a straight “ehm excuse meeee, you had a baby girl and unless you want to see her during her teenage years walking around in military clothes and act like a combat boy then you better let her be more feminine, make her like girly stuff and just let her…

                                                                              *love*

Gosh I truly love Barbie and I’d love to have a full collection “for my daughter” and have different  shoooes… and cloooothes …and all possible accessories.  Talking about accessories I remember when I was little one the day I went over to my friend’s house to play with her  new Barbie house that she got as a present. I was so excited to finally be playing with it and then make Barbie prepare teaaa, put her to beeed and sit her on the sofaaa.  Damn! The house was so far  too small! Barbie could not even fit properly in the elevator (by the way the elevator  which was lifted manually by a thread, kept collapsing from floor 3 to ground zero so Barbie fell out most of the times- not fun) but yeah everything was definitely tiny compared to Barbie’s size. Even the furniture the house was coming with.. in the adverts that I used to see on “Topolino” the sofa looked lovely and cosy,  the chairs looked comfortable… the truth?!? They were actually made of hard plastic not even nicely shaped and they definitely looked too cheap  for my Barbie.
After my initial disappointment, I wasn’t actually bothered too much about the fact that I could not have a Barbie house.. it was pointless anyway for my  BE-AU-TI-FUL  Barbie, she deserved better.
Something that I DO remember totally upset me is that Barbie’s boyfriend was … tadaaaaaaaaam
BIG JIM
yes  big Jim! My lovely “Barbie fior di pesca”  (Barbie “peaches and cream” ) had to go out with big Jim wearing  lumberjack clothing. He didn’t have WHATSOEVER the charm, the smart outfit or the beauty of Ken (plus Big Jim had a stupid button on the back and when you pressed it, his right arm snapped  – Barbie got  systematically punched).

As if it wasn’t enough, I even had the green jeep, not the elegant limousine but the jeep … seriously what’s the point to buy a gorgeous princess Barbie if then you have to see her sitting with her beautiful peachy dress on a bloody military jeep next to a scruffy muscle plastic toy ?!?!
Bless my mum.. .I remember for some strange reason she never bought us Ken but a friend of her gave us big Jim and the jeep as a present so that’s what we had to play with. Oh well I was happy anyway cause I remember my dad made some real wooden furniture for my Barbie and this time they were on scale so Barbie could actually sit on the bench and eat at the table and properly lie in her carefully crafted bed. Then  my mum used to sew little shirts and skirts and every now and again she used to knit tiny scarfs or little jumpers for her…aww beautiful times.

These are the reasons why I care so much to pass on to Beatrice this love for Barbie as this doll reminds me of  a very sweet time of my childhood  when by playing with Barbie I could really dream and let my imagination go.

By the way, maybe it was a sign as my husband is actually more a Big Jim than a Ken. Without the jeep though but the hair look the same.
