World Breastfeeding week 1-7 August

family Comments Off on World Breastfeeding week 1-7 August

It’s the end of World Breastfeeding week and thinking that your baby’s health is the most important concern, I believe that every mom who can breastfeed should do so. I was stunned to hear that some women choose not to breastfeed or to do so just for few weeks.. some  hospitals need breastmilk donation to give to premature babies as breast milk is the only hope they have to survive. So If breastmilk is so precious, why would you not naturally choose to give the best to your own baby?

I have to say this time around I found the social taboo of breastfeeding hitting me harder than the first time. With Bee I didn’t even know breastfeeding was an issue in this country, with Leonardo I notice the “awkward/embarassed face” more often when I breastfeed in public.

“Who cares” is always my attitude although deep inside I get really sad that breastfeeding mothers get confined to feed their babies to a corner,  in a different room or in a toilet.. it makes me really angry actually! Funny enough nobody is bothered by the look of certain women on a saturday night who show more “skin” than a mom breastfeeding!

Aaanyway…  these are my ten reasons (I would probably have more) why breastfeeding  is the best option not only for my little one but for me too:

– breastmilk is free, always available, always at the right temperature, no need of bottles or sterilizing

– breastfeeding allows me to bond with my son and the thought that he lives out of my own milk makes me feel like a super woman!

– breastfeeding helped me to lose all the maternity weight very quickly and go back to my pre-baby jeans!

– breastmilk is so precious can be used to healing conjunctivitis, insect bites and stings, burns or abrasions (pretty powerful eh?)

– I can easily sooth my crying baby by offering him some milk, whenever and wherever

– breastfeeding raises my child’s IQ’s (not that he really needs it  if he takes it from mommy lol!)

– breastmilk tastes amazing! Obviously I tried it! Don’t you taste your child’s food before giving it to him!??!

– breastfeeding provides a measure of protection against breast cancer, ovarian cancer and weak bones later in life

– breastmilk reduces the risk of developing allergies

– breastfeeding burns around 500-800 calories a day so you can have chocolate every day!

Some women are probably insecure and  need a role model to understand that breastfeeding is essential for their baby’s first months of life. That’s why I was thrilled to hear that  Kate Middleton ordered some breastfeeding clothes and the news spread around the world!  She’ll have such a power and will probably make the difference in some moms’ choice.

I like this quote:  “Women should not feel guilty if they are unable to breastfeed, but they *should* feel guilty if they are unwilling to do so, and they should be intellectually honest enough to know the difference”.

Remember… happy babies happy moms!

Royal Baby cupcakes – Welcome George Alexander Louis

Cuisine, Daily photo, family Comments Off on Royal Baby cupcakes – Welcome George Alexander Louis

Welcome to the world (which was eagerly waiting for you!) George Alexander Louis!

I have to admit… watching the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge coming out of the hospital holding that little precious baby, really made me emotional. Somehow I relived the joy we had when our little Prince Leonardo was born 3 months ago (minus the paparazzi lol).  Awww.. that was one of the most precious moments of our lives….

To celebrate the birth of the future King,  I managed to find some time to make these simple Royal Baby cupcakes in honour of little Prince George.

The recipe for these vanilla cupcakes is the one I always use from the BBC website.

While Leonardo was napping (yes! He’s napping during the day in his cot bed!)  I quickly prepared some blue and red fondant to recreate the Union Flag colours and by using some cookie cutters, I cut out different shapes: a little pram, a milk bottle, a rocking horse and babygrow.

The bit that took me longer was the making of the Union flag as I had to cut out little strings of fondant different in lenght and glue them together with some water. That was quite tricky as I had to be careful not to stain the white bits with red or blue colour and trust me doing this in a rush, praying that the baby doesnt wake up, it’s a challenge.

Obviously while I was preparing these cupcakes Leo woke up! Thankfully as I mentioned in my previous post, he’s getting better and better so he was happy enough to bounce in his chair while mommy finished to prepare the Royal cupcakes.

Union flag.. a big bulky but hey you get the idea lol!

I made the same fondant toppers in baby blue colour.

Wonder what the actual Royal babygrows look like…

Congratulations Mommy Kate and Daddy William!

The 12 weeks baby milestone

family Comments Off on The 12 weeks baby milestone

Time has gone so fast…The last 3 months have been one of the most challenging of my life due to the baby being pretty often in pain with colics and silent reflux. I never wanted to wish the time away and I was just hoping that the famous “12 weeks switch” was not a myth!

Leonardo is 12 weeks old today and looking back at old pictures he already looks so different and behaves so differently! I started to notice some changes around a week ago. He now  seems to be a bit more settled and shows  interests for the objects around him. He slowly started to play with little toys and started observing things so I would definitely say that in many ways,  12 weeks represent a big milestone in his life.

Leonardo loves spending time in mommy’s arms and in his bouncy chair. Recently though I noticed that he gets bored easily so I started to leave him spending some time on his playmat and he just loves it! You cannot imagine the relieve for me when every now and then I can have my arms free for half an hour! Or even better when I really don’t know what to do anymore because he screams the house down,I just place him down on the mat  and it works its magic!

Because he can interact more,  he truly enjoys playing in his little colourful gym. What he loves the most though is looking himself in the mirror and “talking” to the other baby. It’s so funny to watch him giggling to his “twin”!

The hanging toys of the Fisher Price gym are withing reach so he loves touching them with his little hands.

The  gym allows Leonardo to play the piano attached to the end of the mat by kicking the piano keys with his tiny feet so he realises that his movements create a sound and he’s even more entertained! Plus every time he kicks a key there is a colourful light coming on.

I read different reviews about this product and I can only agree when they say that the Fisher Price gym is truly a bless for busy moms! Leonardo only just started spending time on his tummy but I will definitely use the mat for tummy time as the top bar can be removed so I will be able to easily place my baby on the mat.

To all moms reading this post, trust me there will be a big change in your baby by 12 weeks but in the meantime ask the grandparents to give you this gym as a present because it will help you to keep your sanity in difficult times!

Leonardo’s first month party

Cuisine, Daily photo, family, Food, motherhood Comments Off on Leonardo’s first month party

A bit late but I finally managed to post some pictures of the little party we had for Leonardo’s first month! Few weeks ago I had the feeling this pregnancy was lasting forever and now my little baby is one month old and I cannot even remember my life without him.

For the occasion I made a sponge cake and few vanilla cupcakes. Obviously everything had to be light blue as we had enough pink for the last 3 years 🙂

Some balloons and milk…

We received so many cards from friends and family and all of them are still hanging in our living room.

My husband again helped with the creation of the little blue shoes and the sugar dummy. My mom (like she did for Beatrice’s birthday) was in charge of making the letters.

In Italy there is a tradition by which you receive  a little silk shirt as a gift for your newborn to wear. It’s like a gesture for good luck  in life. My mom had it  hand embroided for Leonardo.

Happy first month Amore mio!
