Baby avocado

family, motherhood, parenting, pregnancy Comments Off on Baby avocado

Here we are, I promised you a post about what happened in the last few weeks and why I have been taking away from my blog and been concentrating elsewhere.

In a way I spent the last few weeks looking after a vegetable garden as it seems I have gone through different stages of growing both vegetables and fruits. I have to say it has been quite tough and worrying at times but finger crossed I’ve reached a stage where I can now relax and just wait for the results of what I have “planted”.

For my birthday my husband gave me an hydroponic system which is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil.

I wont need to buy live herbs plants every two weeks as this system is tested to ensure you full grow plants that last FOREVER. Brilliant just brilliant especially if like me you like cooking using the unique taste of fresh herbs.

You would probably think.. that’s not a big deal to be worried about and it is definitely not a good reason to neglect a blog. True but I HAVE NOT finished to tell you.. I’ve been busy growing something else..

So first I was growing a poppy seed. After two more weeks it was an apple seed, then a sweet pea, a blueberry, a raspberry, a green olive, then a prune, a lime, a peach, a lemon, an orange and you can now BREAAAAAATHE .

I told you I’ve been busy growing a full bunch of vegetables and fruits or at least that was the feeling when I was reading… MY PREGNANCY UPDATES!

YES!

I’m expecting a Bubu 2… and I could not be happier!!!

It is funny how you can forget so easily how you felt the first time so this time around I was freaking out as I didn’t have any symptoms whatsoever (some would say lucky) and I was thinking that something wasn’t right..that’s why I didn’t feel like writing anything on my blog as my mind was just obsessed to thing about the baby and I wasn’t sure I wanted to see my worries written somewhere.

Now I’m 16 weeks pregnant and going back to vegetables comparisons, my little baby is the size of an avocado which is 4.6 in. To be honest I’ve never seen such a small avocado but hey I believe avocados here are different from the ones we got in Italy 🙂

Will keep you updated! On both baby and vegetables 😉

Not for the faint-hearted

Mamma is back! And she’s got a good excuse for having left this blog without a post for so long BUT this “excuse” deserves a full post on its own so PROMISE I will make it by the end of the week.

In the meantime IT’S HALLOWEEEEEN!

I believe this is the first year that we celebrate Halloween. Firstly because we are Italians and in Italy this is not a big thing, secondly Beatrice last year was too little to understand so we just didn’t think it was that worth it to do something.

This year on the other hand, we had more reasons to celebrate, bake and cook spooky food.

Today was Beatrice last day at the nursery where she spent the last 1 and half years being cuddled and where she learned so many new exciting things. So I decided to bake some cakes and cupcakes for the children and for the nursery teachers just to say a little thanks for all the love they gave to my daughter.

The nursery organised a Halloween party so it was a must having Beatrice all dressed up nicely and spooky. She was such a cutie little witchy pumpkin and had much fun with all her friends

Mamma had fun too making Halloween food. I prepared the dishes last night so I could take pictures just in time for Halloween. In 2 hours I made 2 sponge cakes, 24 spider web cupcakes, one spooky soup, 3 freaky peppers and few little monsters.. ohh I loved it!

Obviously before taking these cupcakes to the nursery I removed the spiders cause I’m sure the children would have eating the plastic spiders too.

I have to say before cooking them, the peppers looked kind of funny little men

After been in the oven for 1 hour  they totally looked like little monsters as they got slightly burned so they acquired the ghostly look I needed for the occasion.

I then made a potatoes and courgette soup and as soon as I took this picture, I HAD to remove the spider cause it was really giving me the chills

Then I boiled few eggs, mixed the yellow with some mayonnaise and filled the whites. I created the monsters legs by cutting black olives in little pieces and added a couple of capers to make the eyes. They were yummy!

And of course it is not Halloween without a carved pumpkin. That was my husband’s task. I just chose the face. I wanted to have a different looking pumpkin so when I saw a picture of the skeleton of “The nightmare before Christmas” I thought that would have been perfect.

And although everything at Halloween is supposed to be scary, just remember even monsters smile!

Happy Halloween!!

THE milestone for an Italian mom

Beatrice likes, Cuisine, family Comments Off on THE milestone for an Italian mom

Everyone should know that the two most important things for an Italian are La Mamma and Pasta of course!!!

So what is the most important milestone that an Italian mother can experience with her daughter? tadaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam

Is it the day her daughter starts talking? Yes, that is exciting too but there is something else..

Is it her first day at nursery? Yes, but that’s a milestone for every mother.

This is what I’m talking about:

Is it when her daughter admires pasta?!!? Nope, check the next picture…

Is it when her daughter EATS pasta?

Is it when her daughter ENJOYS pasta?

Nonononononono nooo.

All these are important but THE  big MILESTONE is actually  when her daughter learns to do… this!

Apologies for the little scream at the end but I was soo excited!!

Well done Bubu! You make your mamma proud!

What makes a good mom?

family, motherhood, parenting Comments Off on What makes a good mom?

How do you know if you are a good mother?

I asked myself this question and I had this terrible fear that maybe I think I’m a good mother when in fact I could perhaps do better.. So I decided to go online and google what people think makes you a good mother and to be honest  I wasn’t really impressed with the answers as most mums said “When your children hug and kiss you” or “When you would do anything for them”

That isn’t enough…

I then  found a test “Answer this questions to prove you are good mother”. The questions included topics related to pregnancy too   “Did you ask for a c section? Did you give birth naturally!??!” Oh come on, I wish that had only depended on me!

I know I give 1000% to my daughter as she’s my life but then when sometimes I lose patience with her, this terrible guilty feeling  just takes over me and ruins my day making me think  I should probably be more understanding with her.

In general I think I’m a good mother, but I feel I need to prove I AM  and be told that I am, pretty often. So why is that?

Based on this I decided to run a list of “Signs” that I think would suggest you are a good mother and maybe on the path to become a perfect mother (Is there such thing !??!) so that whenever I have the feeling that I could have done more for my daughter I can read them and feel instantly better! (yeah right, *magic wand*).

YOU are a good mother when:

  • You choose organic products to feed your child (this is number one only cause I’m totally into organic at the moment!! Go green!);
  • You make your own baby food;
  • You play with your child and forget the laundry, the dishes (happy to do that!);
  • You don’t scream at your child after she squeezed the moisturising body cream you love, on the carpet;
  •  You kiss, cuddle and tell your child you love her every day, every time you can (In Italian culture there is no such thing as too many kisses!);
  • You nurture and protect your child, always;

On the safe side

  • You know when letting go (ehm I still have to improve this one);
  • You DON’T tell your child the bear will come if she decides to have another tantrum (It’s true though! Bears don’t like tantrums);
  • You make your child brushing her teeth every day (and possibly not eating too much tooth paste);
  • You are patient, patient, very patient;
  • You are supportive in whatever you child wants to do (a part from exploring your cats litter);
  • You admit of being wrong and apologize for that (ok the Cinderella DVD is not broken but I cannot bear to watch it anymore);
  • When disciplining your child you come down to her level and in a calm manner you explain your reasons,  no matter what;
  • You force yourself to get out of the house and go to the park even when you are dead tired or have a cold;
  • You praise your child to encourage good behaviour;
  • You stop what you are doing to listen to your child;
  • You teach your child values;
  • You make sure you make time for your marriage, so that your child grows up seeing how important it is to nurture relationships (A good friend of mine suggested this one – Thanks Caulie!);

And then I read this…

“You’re only a terrible mother if you NEVER think you are one.”

Pfewwwwwwwwwwwwww
