Life is a beach

I hardly find anytime to bake cakes these days so I was so happy when my friend asked me to make a beach themed cake for her mother. She found a picture of a lovely cake online and she asked me to make something similar.

The only time  I made a beach theme cake was for my husband’s 40th birthday but this one was a bit different. This time I had to challenge myself and make something I’ve never done before: an edible palm and a beach chair.

I thought it wouldn’t be a big deal… wrong! For the palm the leaves would just not stay put and no matter what I was using to make them, they kept breaking… until I found the simple solution to support them from underneath with cocktails sticks and it worked! The palm was made out of modelling chocolate and the leaves were sugar paste.

For the sand I used light brown sugar and to make the seashells I used fondant and a plastic mould. I started making them about a week in advance because they needed to be firm and dry by the time I had to put them on a cake.

Making the chair took me an incredible amount of hours! Honestly it was so difficult to cut all the little pieces and combining them together. I had to make sure they were perfectly glued (sugar glued!) one to another to make the chair stay put.

This was my first time making edible flower and although they were very simple I thought they looked good.

Here the cake, ready to be collected. My friend loved it and her mum too!

What should I bake next?

Our celebration for Daddy’s 40th birthday

Although this picture looks like it was taken in 1973, it was actually from last Sunday when we celebrated Daddy’s 40th birthday!! As promised, I organised a surfing dessert table in memory of his surfing adventures.daddy's 40th birthday

I took the Friday off from work and baked baked baked !!! There was a cake, nope actually two cakes, many cupcakes, cake pops and different cookies: sharks, surfers and surfing boards.

40th cake

We had a very relaxing day. It was beautiful and sunny outside so while I was finishing the last touches for the table, daddy enjoyed the gorgeous weather and played outside with the kids. In the afternoon we had some friends coming over to make a toast (we had a huge bottle of Taittinger – oh yeah!) and plenty of sweets as you can see!

40th cupcakes

The day before, I organised a piccola surprise. I had two of his best friends flying over from Italy and they surprised him by pretending to be burglars and attempting to steal his beloved motorbike! Imagine his face! I actually made a video which is incredible funny and I might share it with you in the near future…

You cannot imagine how difficult it was to stick those £$*@ waves on the cake! I spent hours and they kept breaking until my genius husband proposed to place them on a parchment paper and transfer them on the cake, brilliant! It saved my night!

On a Friday night I started making these beach ball cake pops. I was up until 1 am and at that point I have to admit, I actually started to enjoy making them and could have carried on all night (sick I know lol).

I had bought two giant balloons to decorate the table but didn’t want to include the full picture as one was bigger than the other.. explanation? They were so big that a full tank of helium wasn’t enough to fill both of them! #fail 🙁

Daddy’s 40th birthday was an amazing one and we celebrated the way my husband wanted, low-key surrounded by good friends and good food!

Edible cookie birthday card

On Monday it was Nonna Nuti’s birthday so we decided to do something different and.. baked! Haha yeah but we didn’t bake the usual birthday cake, instead we decided to bake Vanilla butter cookies and make an edible Birthday card!

Nonna Nuti lives in Italy therefore we virtually gave her the card during our Skype birthday party! And then WE ate it!

We started preparing the cookies earlier the same morning when Leonardo went for a nap. Bee and I made the dough and then cut the letters out.

Then we baked them, cool them off and created the card! It was easy and fun!

 And cookies were yummy!

Nom nom nom…

Let’s play with the letters!

If you would like to make them too, you can find step by step instructions in this post

Happy birthday Nonna Nuti!

Yellow Pantone party!

Happyyy biiiiirthdaaaayyyy to youuuuu!!! Tanti auuuguuuriiii a teeee!!!

This is my Pantone dessert table created for my graphic designer husband for his birthday. He LOOOVED IT! Thank God because I was literally fainting after having baked and prepared all these sweets!

I knew recently he was getting obsessed with the yellow colour so I thought to use it for this dessert table combined with the Pantone theme. He was happy to create food cards and food wrappers which I think gave a personal touch to the table. He made the personalised giant poster which is the perfect backdrop for this table!

I prepared different types of sweets to give variety to the table and although I swore not to make cakepops again ( I end up eating too much chocolate while making them and it’s really hard to shape them round!),  they look so good on a dessert table! These were vanilla cakepops covered with vanilla chocolate.

I then made orange pannacotta.

I filled the juice dispenser with Pinapple juice and decorated some milk bottles with a customized Pantone wrapper

Vanilla cupcakes decorated with Swiss meringue buttercream

Marshmallow dipped in chocolate

I loved the idea to cover some chocolate bars with a customized wrapper

I made these vanilla cookies in advance and covered with royal icing. They looked great at the beginning but unfortunately they turned out a bit bumpy after a day 🙁

Buon compleanno Amore!
